PHAKAMISA Dance Commission – 2024

CCA JOMBA! and the Market Theatre PHAKAMISA Dance Commission – 2024

2024 launches an innovative joint annual dance commission by the CCA JOMBA! and the Market Theatre with the express purpose of supporting and making space for innovative and provocative South African dance makers. Titled the PHAKAMISA Dance Commission – with reference to the isiZulu idea of lifting up and holding – this commission is an ongoing commitment to the illustrious JOMBA! and Market Theatre partnership (started in 2023) to grow and support South African dance. We are delighted, at a difficult intersection of global histories to support the work and vision of Cape Town-based Yaseen Manuel. His unique access to his own Muslim South African history with the intersection of both personal and political dance storytelling, makes him an exceptional voice in dance.

Yaseen Manuel

Madha Kan - YASEEN MANUEL

Yaseen Manuel is a Cape Town-born and based dancer. He is a skilled dancer and teacher and while he works as an independent artist, he is also a member of the ground-breaking integrated dance company Unmute Dance Theatre.  Manuel’s own Cape Town history and personal Muslim spirituality and legacy features prominently in his work and the South African dance community sat up and took notice of his work when he began a series of solos in 2016/17 that connected race, religion and ideas of masculinity in choreographed evocations of deeply neglected stories and identities in the South African landscape. His recent dance work Aslama, linked the Syrian massacre to a more internal battle for self and identity, has been called ‘both terrifying and beautiful!’ Contemporary dance and improvisation form the base of his choreographic technique, but ever present is his neo-classical training.

ABOUT THE WORK:

Madha Kan is a deeply personal journey that interrogates the current events unfolding in Palestine; capturing not only the harsh realities but also the deep compassion and kindness of its citizens. Initially a solo endeavor, Madha Kan is now evolving into a new ensemble work for JOMBA! and will be premiered nationally at JOMBA!
