After a four-year hiatus, JOMBA! is delighted to be opening up its ‘by application’ JOMBA! LIVE OPEN HORIZONS. This open performance platform provides an opportunity for choreographers (some new to choreography and some professional dancers) to present their work in a professional environment with the support of a full technical team. This is one of the ways in which the JOMBA! festival helps in developing dance and choreographic talent by offering open professional performance spaces. Selection of participants is done by a panel of experts via the scrutiny of entry forms.
For 2024 we are delighted to be offering a rich and varied programme featuring the following five choreographers;
The JOMBA! LIVE OPEN HORIZONS JURY members for 2024 are:
Clare Craighead (non-voting Chair): is a Drama and Performance Studies lecturer at DUT, a dance writer and academic with a keen interest in arts on a digital platform. She is based in KZN.
Thobile Maphanga (Chair) is a dancer, dance writer and researcher interested in the histories and narratives of black women creatives. She is also the JOMBA! Assistant Curator and Project manager. She is based in Durban.
Jabu Siphika is a veteran Durban based dancer and choreographer and is a senior company member of FLATFOOT DANCE COMPANY. She is born and raised in KwaMashu!
Tammy Ballantyne Webber is a Johannesburg based dance writer and journalist whose national advocacy work in dance is well- respected.
Yaseen Manuel is an award-winning Cape Town based dancer and choreographer who works as a solo/independent artist, and who also works as part of Unmute Dance Theatre.

One of the highlights of every festival sees JOMBA! partner with Stable Theatre on Sunday 1 September at 2pm to host its JOMBA! YOUTH OPEN HORIZONS. An open call for participation for dancers under 16yrs was sent out early in 2024 and we are delighted to host and support young dancers on our JOMBA! platform. This event is free and is a beautiful and joyful way to honour youth dance progammes happening in and around our city.
