Jay Pather is a choreographer, multi-media artist, curator, writer, and teacher. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Cape Town where he directs the Institute for Creative Arts (ICA). He is curator for the Infecting the City Public Art Festival; the /CA Live Art Festival and the Afrovibes Festival (The Netherlands). He also co-curates Spier Light Art (Cape Town) and Mostro Internacional de Teotro de Sao Paulo, Brazil. He has co-curated the Africa 2020/21 Season (France); Live Art for Zeitz MOCAA (Cape Town) and the Spielart Festival (Munich). His artistic work deploys site-specific, interdisciplinary, and intercultural strategies to frame postcolonial imaginaries, decolonisation and matters of social justice. Recent publications include Decolonization and Dance, a collection of essays co-edited with Sigrid Gareis, an article for Routledge Companion to Art in the Public Realm and two books, Transgressions, Live Art in South Africa and Restless Infections, public art for a transforming city. Recent addresses include for Festival of the Future City in Bristol, lnventur in Dusseldorf, for Independent Curators International in New York City, New Orleans and Accra, Sommerokodemie in Venice, International Conference on African Cultures in Harare and at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. Pother was appointed Fellow at Queen Mary’s College, University of London, International Chair at Artec, Paris 8 University and made Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture. In 2023 he was awarded the Villa Albertine Residency. He served as a juror for the TURN Fonds and Board member of the Notional Arts Festival of South Africa .
