JOMBA! Forging Futures Panel Platform (2024)
TOPIC: Solidarity in the face of conflict and silencing
This year’s Forging Futures discussion at the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience centres around the current silencing of artists in times of conflicts that we have witnessed mainly in the global North. The polarisation of the world has been highlighted in the recent past. A wave of resistance has shown artists returning post-graduate and honorary degrees and awards to major institutions such as the Goethe Institute and University of the Arts London just to name two. Social media platforms have become hot beds of polarised reactions to propaganda and solidarity groups of resistance.
Through this discussion we invite artistsYaseen Manuel (SA), UKZN’s Centre for Creative Arts directorIsmail Mahomed (SA), and Human Rights ActivistNadia Meer (SA) to discuss and comment on the current issues facing artists who have become at risk or risky during times of solidarity brought on by unthinkable global and local conflict and oppression and discuss strategies that have been employed around this.
This JOMBA! FORGING FUTURE discussion is free and open to all (booking essential through thobimaphanga@gmail.com) and will take place at the Wellington Tavern at the Sneddon Theatre on Saturday 31 August from 11.30am – 1pm. All attendees will get a free ticket to the 2.30pm matinee showcasing Yaseen Manuel’s new work, Madha Kan.
