JOMBA! takes joy in welcoming back Fana Tshabalala – our 2019 JOMBA! Mellon Artist in Residence. Based in Gauteng, Fana returns to JOMBA! to premier his latest solo work that he began creating as part of the 2019 residency. Zann, a deeply moving solo exploration into unstable mental states that look at delusions of freedom in a world of change.
Tshabalala is the 2013 Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner for Dance and former associate artistic of the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative, and the 2018 Black Excellence Award recipient in Chicago. Tshabalala started his career by being involved in different community dance groups, and is now currently working at Broken Borders Arts Project as a dancer, teacher, choreographer, artistic director, and one of the founders. In 2013 he choreographed Indumba for National Arts Festival and the work went on to perform at Arts Alive in Johannesburg and JOMBA! Festival in Durban. Indumba has also been recreated in Chicago with Deeply Rooted Dance Theatre. In 2013 he was also in residency for 3 months at the Centre National de la Danse in Pantin and Klap Maison pour danse in Marseille. He has recently returned from an African tour with his duet “Between us” where he performed in 12 countries. Amongst different projects he has been doing, he also worked with James Ngcobo the artistic director of the Market Theatre as a choreographer and movement facilitator.
