Welcome to the ADDN-JOMBA Festival-Colloquium 2024!
The JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience has a long history of including diverse and integrated dance work in its programming. In 2022, JOMBA’s curator Lliane Loots (UKZN, SA) teamed up with Yvette Hutchison (University of Warwick, UK) to work on the UKRI-funded project Encountering disability through contemporary dance in Africa, which explores widening citizenship through dance. As part of this project, Hutchison and Loots set up the African Dance Disability Network.
In 2023, JOMBA! programmed three specific integrated pieces by collaborators on the project into its main festival: The Netherlands Introdans’s Hub Club, Ugandan Joseph Tebandeke’s Time Machine: Unveiling the Inner Strength and South African Unmute Dance Company’s Time Lapse. This 2024 festival-colloquium precedes the main JOMBA! festival as an extension of this initiative. It offers time and space for shared embodied workshops, panel discussions of key issues and collective sharing of some amazing work by artists from Africa and across the globe in the evening performances. We hope that you engage fully and take much from the next 4 days as we collaboratively explore Disability as Gain.
