The JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, housed in the Centre for Creative Arts (CCA) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, is proud to announce that curator mentee, Thobile Maphanga has been selected to participate in the 19th edition of the Atelier for Young Festival Managers from 1-7 June 2022 in Montreal (Canada)

Thobile is one of 35 international participants who have been carefully selected out of 90+ applications for this unique 7-day training programme. The Atelier is an intense global programme during which participants will discuss various aspects of festival management with colleagues, peers and renowned directors from outstanding international festivals and arts centres from all over the world. The training will focus on artistic vision, public responsibility and community building, creation and coproduction, digitalisation, internationalisation, networking and (environmental) sustainability of festivals.

Thobile is a Durban-based arts practitioner, writer, creative collaborator and emerging festival curator. She is passionate about the arts and more specifically how the arts is used to negotiate collective and individual being.  She says, “I believe deeply in the power of art to change perspectives and hearts, and in current times I see the role of artists, arts spaces, and festivals to be ever more vital.  I am deeply passionate about amplifying voices that have been othered and silenced and believe through festival platforms we can do this more frequently and effectively”.

“While the CCA is able to support some of the costs of getting Thobi to Canada, Thobi has launched a crowd funding campaign (BACK A BUDDY) to assist in raising funds to pay her airfare and her fees,” appeals Lliane Loots, Artistic Director of JOMBA! “This is an enormous honour for both Thobi but also for Durban – one of our own young creatives is being invited and we know that she will bring back so much that will enrich our own arts scene. Please help by donating – no amount is too small!”
