The first project to be supported by the newly launched Sustaining Theatre and Dance (STAND) Foundation is a partnership with the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience hosted by UKZN’s Centre for Creative Arts.

Known as the STAND Foundation JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience Choreographic Mentorship Project, the initiative will combine four young choreographers who have already tested their choreographic languages on the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience platform, with four experienced mentors over a ten-week period, with the intention of producing new digital dance pieces.

The four dance pieces will be filmed and broadcast on the JOMBA! Dance Festival’s YouTube Channel and via their website from late November till 14 December 2020.

The four mentees are Sabelo Cele, a 26-year-old queer male choreographer and LGBTI activist based in Durban; Pavishen Paideya, the 27-year-old Artistic Director and Lead Choreographer of Rudra Dance Theatre; Kaldi Makutike, a South African-born Congolese who has experimented with the possibilities of analogue and digital live performance and Phumlani Mndebele, who performed and collaborated with other artists as part of Season 5 at the Centre for the Less Good Idea in 2019.

The mentors are Alfred Hinkel, Gregory Maqoma, Sbonakaliso Ndaba and Musa Hlatshwayo, all celebrated choreographers with numerous awards and decades of experience between them.

“We are really excited by this collaboration” said Gregory Maqoma, Chairperson of the STAND Commission, “as it reflects both our commitment to engaging in partnerships with players in the dance and theatre world, and our vision to build and support a new generation of outstanding dance and theatre-makers”.

Lliane Loots, Artistic Director of the JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience said that she was proud of the platform that the festival has provided to showcase new talent over the years.  “We are delighted to be partnering with STAND in taking what we do a step further, and we look forward to the outcomes of these outstanding mentors working with these excellent mentees.”
