Dance Exploration and Innovation in JOMBA’s Fringe and @ The Edge Programmes

New works, dance innovation, body politics, pushing boundaries and daring to challenge the status quo are the order of the day in this year’s JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience’s Fringe and On The Edge programmes on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 September respectively at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre during the festival.

The 2019 JOMBA! Fringe offers nine new dance works by JC Zondi (Pietermaritzburg), Carla Mostert (Durban), David April with students of the University of Pretoria, Lethiwe Mzimela (Durban), Nkanyiso Mazibuko (Durban), Vuyo Ndawonde (Pietermaritzburg), Sbonelo Mchunu (Durban), Yaseen Manuel (Cape Town) and Jabu Siphika (Durban). The programme starts at 7.30pm on Wednesday, 4 September.

Every year local dance-makers are supported by JOMBA! through funding by the eThekwini Municipality to present new works in JOMBA! on the Edge. This is part of the festival’s mandate to aid and develop Durban dance-makers. Grants this year have been given to Sizwe Hlophe and Thulisile Binda – both have been given mentorship and guidance from the JOMBA! technical team to realise their work for stage.

Durban born, Thulisle Binda , presents “Nina Wabantu” a passionate dance journey into the ideals of  motherhood and belonging. Questioning the expectations that a mother places on her daughter, Binda’s dance work is a journey into ‘becoming’ your own self.

Sizwe Hlophe, explores the journey of two men trying to find meaning on the fringes of society in his new work, “On the Margin I …”. In his commission, Hlophe follows these men faced with the chaos of society and journeys into how this alienation allows these ‘misfits’ to negotiate interacting with each other. His bold and athletic style is sure to please audiences.

The JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience is presented by the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts with support from the eThekwini Municipality.
